VEGAS LEX is a partner of Philip C. Jessup National Law Court Competition

In February Philip C. Jessup National Law Court Competition* was held in O.E. Kutafin Moscow State Law Academy. For the second consecutive year VEGAS LEX, the only Russian law firm, became a partner of the competition and sponsored such a bright event in the life of law students.

Alexander Sitnikov , Managing Director, Partner at VEGAS LEX, was invited as an honorary guest to speak to the participants and winners of the competition.

Any law faculty of any Russian University could put its team in the competition. To do so, it was necessary to write two memoranda on the offered matter, justifying the legal position of the team, both from the plaintiff's and the defendant's perspective. Participants were expected to perform at the oral rounds of the competition in front of a panel of three judges. The judges were teachers and law practitioners. According to the rules, the winners of the national competition are eligible to participate in C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition which will be held in the U.S. in Spring 2012.

This year case presented a dispute between two countries over the destruction of cultural heritage. It raised a question of international liability for the use of force by the government participating in the regional operations to establish democracy. The case determined who had the authority to represent the country at the international level after coup d'état.

Competitions in the sphere of dispute resolution give students a unique opportunity to feel the atmosphere of this kind of legal work and acquire necessary skills.
