Maria Borzova talks about ways to support cheap pharmaceuticals production on PharmVestnik-TV

The problem with keeping vital and essential pharmaceuticals in the low price segment has reached its peak in Russia due to a rise in drug production costs. The President has ordered to prevent the discontinuation of manufacturing of cheap medicines. Manager of VEGAS LEX Life sciences projects Maria Borzova discussed the possible scenarios in the 7 days in 7 minutes program on the PharmVestnik-TV channel:

“I would say there are several options here. One is to change the pricing methodology for such drugs, but again, this isn’t about whether that would lead to discriminatory treatment of other manufacturers. The second option involves measures of state support for domestic manufacturers, who actually lose profit making these cheap drugs – possibly subsidies for pharmaceutical substances procurement, or any financial support measures that would minimize their costs, but it should also involve some mutual obligations on the part of the producers, because in any case state support should not go one way”.

Other issues discussed:

  • Distributors are now allowed to apply wholesale markup

  • Alexander Vinokourov has bought a stake in SIA International

  • The methodology for calculating fees for inspection of foreign production facilities has been approved

  • The size of regional markup on vital and essential medicines has to be agreed with FAS
